Sergio Aragonés

In the mid-90s I attended a Gen Con Q&A session with Sergio Aragonés. The following all were statements of his. However, this is from my memory (which may be flawed) and based on his statements (which may have been incorrect).

  1. In the US Aragonés sought work as a comic book artist. He was repeatedly warned off comics work by several different people. He was told that comics paid very poorly, but Mad Magazine paid pretty well. As a result of being repeated warned, he sought and received work for Mad.
  2. When he joined, Mad ran small text jokes in the margins of the magazine. Sergio suggested that he could do small, text-free cartoon jokes instead. They agreed, but only expected him to successfully do a small number of issues before giving up.
